Brighton Rock

Hale didn't feel so hearty when he met the razor gang
And got his ticket punched for good and all.
And went out with a whimper, not a devastating bang,
But his end it was the start of Pinkie's fall.

Now a juvenile delinquent wearing acne on his face,
And the merest bit of bum-fluff on his chin,
Might seem banal, but Pinkie had a special kind of grace,
On account of being intimate with sin.

Whereas Ida, Pinkie's nemesis, all lipstick, rouge and port,
Was your classic interfering humanist.
She was all for right and wrong as they're conventionally taught,
But the deeper metaphysics she just missed.

She was out to rescue Rose - that's Pinkie's innocent young wife -
From a life of squalor, misery and crime;
But her intervention cost the poor satanic boy his life,
Meaning Rose was widowed long before her time.

She went off with a disc she'd got her husband to record
(Little knowing she would hear his dying curse) -
While Ida settled down to meddle with her oija board
In her average, sensual, Godless universe.
